Phitsanulok Airport

Phitsanulok Airport (PHS) serves Thailand's lower north, and it is about 60 kilometres by road from Sukhothai. The Royal Thai Air Force owns the field and the Department of Airports runs the civil side of it. Every carrier in current published route data flies to Bangkok Don Mueang and nowhere else.

Which airlines fly to Phitsanulok Airport

Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air serve the airport, each of them to Don Mueang. Nok Air is still named here by some reference works, but its flights stopped appearing in schedules for this airport during 2024, and the operator's own flight board does not show it. No Suvarnabhumi service appears in current route listings, which matters if you are connecting from a long-haul flight.

A long-haul arrival into Suvarnabhumi and a domestic departure from Don Mueang means crossing Bangkok between two airports with the city in between. Where the two legs are booked separately, leave more time between them than a single ticket would need.

Thai AirAsia cut its Don Mueang to Phitsanulok service through May and June 2026 without suspending it, as part of a wider reduction it described as temporary and blamed on jet fuel costs and weak mid-year demand.

Getting to Sukhothai from Phitsanulok

Sukhothai is about 60 kilometres away by road, which published guides put at roughly an hour. If the historical park is where you are going, that hour belongs in the plan for the day you land rather than in the surprise column.

The field, and the two jumbo jets left on it

The single asphalt runway is 3,000 metres long, and a business-aviation handbook lists the control tower as staffed around the clock with customs and immigration on request. That directory carries no revision date, so it is a starting point for a question rather than a statement of the airport's current arrangements.

Two decommissioned Boeing 747s left behind by Orient Thai Airways have stood beside the tarmac for years. The airline stopped flying and filed for bankruptcy in October 2018. Thai press reported that the airport wanted the pair moved so the strip could be cleared, and that a later tax investigation found both had been stripped of engines and other parts.

Reference works still describe both aircraft as being there, but that description has not been refreshed in years, so whether they remain is an open question. Treat them as something you may or may not see from the apron.

How busy Phitsanulok Airport is

Published statistics give the airport 517,449 passengers in 2025, up by about 13 per cent on the year before. That was still short of 2019, when it handled 689,392 passengers, so the recovery had not closed the gap.

What the government has planned for the airport

Nation Thailand reported in May 2026 that Phitsanulok is one of eight airports the government intends to upgrade into hub airports, with biometric systems and advance passenger screening planned. That report gives 2027 only for Krabi and Udon Thani, and no date for Phitsanulok.

Getting into the city

Third-party guides describe taxis as the usual way in, at roughly ten to fifteen minutes, with tuk-tuks and songthaews as the budget option and some hotels running their own transfers. Those guides describe regular public buses to the airport as poor.

The Department of Airports lists transport, shops, restaurants and a lounge as categories for this airport, without publishing what is in the terminal behind them. Lists of named cafes and car-hire desks circulate for Phitsanulok with nothing from the operator behind them, so ask at the counter rather than arriving with a plan that depends on one.
