Loei Airport (LOE) is in Na An subdistrict, in the Mueang district of Loei province, and the Department of Airports runs it. One airline serves it, to Bangkok Don Mueang.

Which airline flies to Loei Airport

Thai AirAsia flies between Loei and Bangkok Don Mueang, and it added the airport to its network in February 2015. The operator's own flight board showed that airline and that destination alone on the day this page was written.

Nok Air is among the airlines that have served Loei in the past, along with Air Andaman, Happy Air, Thai Smile and Solar Air.

Every flight from Loei goes to Don Mueang. If you are arriving on a long-haul flight into Suvarnabhumi, that means crossing Bangkok between two separate airports, and that transfer has to be planned in its own right.

How Loei Airport came to be where it is

The airport started on a temporary site near the provincial hall, in the middle of the city. In 1942 the governor, Tien Kamtetphet, began planning a permanent field outside it, and forest was cleared and land levelled for a runway. The Royal Thai Air Force took ownership in 1946 and added a passenger terminal.

It was licensed and opened on 13 December, in either 1953 or 1954 depending on which part of the record you read. The Department of Commercial Aviation took it over in 1968 and added runway work, a fire station, an engine workshop and navigation aids.

The Wat Pho Chai site and the 1968 works

The 1968 earthworks ran over an archaeological site on the western edge of Ban Na An, directly north of the terminal, where the ruins of Wat Pho Chai stood. A survey in 1969, led by Nai Mi Somasi, found the area largely destroyed by heavy machinery: a badly damaged ordination hall foundation and a few pottery sherds were what remained.

A customs airport, and land approved for a new terminal

The government approved the push to make Loei a customs airport in January 2016, and the designation was achieved in 2017. In September 2018 it approved buying a further 460 rai of land to expand the apron and build a new passenger terminal.

The runway

Loei has one asphalt runway, 01/19, 2,100 metres long. The airport sits 860 feet above sea level.
